Neon lights occur by putting electrical tension into noble gases in a glass tube. The first neon sign was presented at the Paris Motor Show in 1910 by the neon inventor Georges Claude.  Neon signs gained extreme popularity all over the world in the years from 1920-1960. Especially in the United States and the giant neon installations on Time Square were world famous. In addition to signage, neon lights today are also used by artists and architects.

Neon derives from the Greek word NEOs, which means new. The element was discovered by coincidence in 1898 by Scopper William Ramsay and Englishman Morris W. Traver, both of whom were chemists

Neon is now manufactured industrially and is traded under pressure in steel bottles. Pure neon gives red radiation, but other colors can be achieved by using colored glass or by adding other gases.

The production of neon lights is a craft which is aimed at bending glass tubes in different shapes. A craftsman in this subject is called a glass bender or tube bender.  The neon tube is supplied in one metre glass tube, which is bent into individual and specially designed shapes.

The production of neon lights is 100% handmade and a labor intensive process. The craftsmen use only custom-made tools they have developed themselves. 

What is a neon sign?

The first neon sign was sold to a barber in Paris in 1912 by the neon inventor Georges Claude in 1912. Neon lights were dubbed floating fire in the vernacular and quickly became popular and widely disseminated throughout Europe. In 1923, the first neon signs came to the United States. It was a car dealership in Los Angeles who bought two neon signs and set them up in front of his business.
