Neon is a stable gas found in large quantities in the universe, but only as a small percentage of Earth's atmosphere. It is a common misconception that all neon signs contain only neon gas. A neon sign containing only neon gas lights up red-orange. If the sign is to light up in other colors, it requires mixing other gases and elements in the neon sign. The most commonly used are argon, mercury, krypton, helium and xenon.

The first neon sign was presented at the Paris Motor Show in 1910 by the neon inventor Georges Claude.  Neon signs gained extreme popularity all over the world in the years from 1920-1960. Especially in the United States and the giant neon installations on Time Square were world famous. In addition to neon signs, neon lights today are also used by artists and architects.
